Austria "Assessment Learning"
We got motivated by . . .
. . . the information and knowledge on Portfolio Assessment as demonstrated to us in Blankenberge, Belgium in March, 2015. The method enables pupils to gather evidence of their own competencies and learning progress in portfolio form, so they become more aware of their strengths and weaknesses. Especially notable is that it helps them understand and handle various situations more effectively. It also makes it possible for teachers, together with parents, to design specific curriculae tailored to each individual pupil.
The Austrian educational system is structured differently than in Belgium, but some elements of Portfolio Assessment can be applied here, though perhaps not to the same extent as feasible in Blankenberge.
We thoroughly enjoyed reviewing the methods at the lovely Blankenberge school house. The environment there provides a warm, safe, loving atmosphere. It is easy to imagine what a pleasure it must be to work and learn there every day, which inspires considerations on how our local school building regulations could be adapted to meet present day requirements in better ways.
With great interest we observed the Belgian pupils using new technologies such as i-Pads in combination with beamers. We recognize the importance for Austrian pupils to become competent at comparable levels in the new millenium. New technology skills are indispensible in our special education programs.
Sharing these ideas with colleagues in other countries is invaluable to us for sharpening our competence in education.
