Belgium: Romano Centro (Vienna)
Mr. Ferdinand Koller presented a very interesting speech on the Roma Mediators Program his Romano Centro presents between the school and the Roma parents. He gave us an insight in the different groups of Roma that exist in the world and with which they deal with through their program. Interesting was the fact that the different groups each use a specific dialect and not all speak Romani. Some even speak a very old Romanian dialect. What makes it even more complicated is the fact that Roma people often follow different religions.
All mediators between the school and the Roma community are Roma women or Romnja and their main task is to be very alert for problems that would strengthen the feeling of ‘antigypsyism’ against the Roma people.
We got motivated by this information as we have dealt and are still dealing with Roma children in our school.
