Austria "Therapy Dogs"
In the academic year 2013/14 the project "Lernmotivation Hund" (“Learning Motivation: Dog”) was started, in which the therapy dogs Cèla and Kascho are used in class by Daniel Schmidt. The students have the opportunity to interact with the dog, to practice tricks and to play with it. However, they also unconsciously exercise positive character traits, such as deference, empathy, etc.
Scientific studies (Beetz, Andrea 2012: Hunde im Schulalltag. Grundlagen und Praxis. München.) prove that the use of a therapy dog has many positive effects on the social climate. Research has shown that children can learn basic social skills, such as independence, integration into the class and their sense of responsibly to a much greater extent by interacting with the dogs.
A therapy dog trusts the children and helps to reduce stress, for example at tests, in the learning of duties and tasks, as well as in the development of reliability and friendship. It acts as an active helper in overcoming conflicts and stress as well as a playmate during the breaks.
Also, working with the "class dog" is often a reason for increased motivation and willingness to learn for the students.
